The Quranic Therapeutic Approach to Aristotle's Theory of Moral Weakness
Sayyid Mohammad Akbarian
Abstract:   (958 Views)
From the point of view of Socrates and Plato, the wickedness of human beings is due to their ignorance. In his critique of this idea, Aristotle points out the weakness of moral will due to which impious human beings, despite being aware of the wickedness of their actions, commit them. According to Aristotle, the cause of these behaviors is the sensual desire that leads man to what is contrary to reason. From the perspective of the verses of the Quran, moral weakness and behavior contrary to the rule of reason are permissible, but the view of the Quran is therapeutic, and accordingly it perceives the causes of moral weakness to be beyond the sensual desire and internal factors. Satan and the world are two important factors outside of man’s existence that affect human will and his moral weakness. On the other hand, and more important than the weakness of will, is the cure for this problem and the solution that the Quran offers. The most important method of the Quran for treatment is to weaken the causes of moral weakness and to align sensual desire and lust with the rule of reason, and the most effective way to implement it is to change the direction of wishes and sensual desires by changing the ultimate goal of man and replacing worldliness with other-worldliness.
Keywords: moral weakness, weakness of will, sensual desire, therapeutic.
