One of the most prominent companions and reliable narrators of the two truthful Imams (peace be upon them) is Abu al-Qasim Burayd ibn Mu‘awiya al-‘Ajali. Despite his esteemed position in hadith and jurisprudence, contradictory narrations (four praising and three condemning) have been reported about him in al-Kashshi’s rijal works. Given these conflicting reports and considering Burayd’s role in preserving and transmitting the heritage of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), resolving this contradiction becomes essential. Accordingly, this study employs a descriptive-analytical approach utilizing library research to examine the praising and condemning narrations about Burayd in al-Kashshi’s rijāl. The findings indicate that the praising narrations, by virtue of their greater number, sound chains of transmission, and laudatory expressions such as “the pillars of the earth,” “the notable figures of religion,” and “the most beloved of people—both living and dead,” place Burayd at the highest rank of reliability and scientific and spiritual status. In contrast, the condemning narrations are found to be weak, anomalous, and rare in terms of their chains, conflicting with the praising narrations and the consensus of scholars regarding Burayd. Therefore, their authenticity is doubtful. Moreover, even assuming the veracity of these condemning narrations, contextual considerations such as political and social interests or preventing the spread of erroneous interpretations might justify their issuance from Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) without undermining Burayd’s credibility and trustworthiness.
