Islamic scholars, inspired by the conduct of the Prophet Moḥammad (pbuh), authentic narrations, interpretive principles, and reflective engagement with Qur’anic verses and contextual indicators, have long sought to uncover the intended meanings of the divine text. Among these indicators, context (siyāq) occupies a unique and irreplaceable position in discerning the speaker’s intent, particularly in Qur’anic interpretation. Numerous definitions of siyāq have been proposed, differing mainly in their scope and boundaries. Broadly, these definitions fall into two categories: the intra-textual view, which limits siyāq to the immediate textual surroundings (the preceding and following discourse), and the extra-textual view, which extends it to any external clue or evidence pointing to the speaker’s intended meaning. A close examination of the exegetical works of Āyatullāh Jaʿfar Subḥānī places him among proponents of the intra-textual perspective, defining siyāq as “an indicator revealing the speaker’s intent through the examination of the surrounding discourse, provided no stronger opposing evidence exists and that potentially contradictory texts have been duly investigated.” An analysis of Subḥānī’s exegetical work, Munyat al-Ṭālibīn fī Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-Mubīn, demonstrates that siyāq performs diverse interpretive functions, which may be classified into the following categories: linguistic and grammatical analysis, clarification of meaning and intent, critical evaluation of exegetical opinions, assessment of reports on occasions of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), exegesis of legal verses (āyāt al-aḥkām), theological discussions, historical contexts, and literary subtleties of the Qur’an. Employing a descriptive–analytical method and drawing upon library-based sources, this study concludes that a systematic typology of contextual indicators in Munyat al-Ṭālibīn has not previously been undertaken, thereby offering a novel contribution to contemporary Qur’anic hermeneutics.
