A Novel Analysis of the Semantic Components of Ṣirāṭ al-Mustaqīm in the Holy Qur’an

Abstract:   (15 Views)
Despite its high frequency and central position in the discourse of revelation, ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm (the Straight Path) has seldom been analyzed in the Qur’an as a coherent semantic system. Adopting an innovative approach, the present study examines the semantic components of ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm and its conceptual equivalence to the comprehensive Qur’anic notion of dīn, exploring its status as one of the most significant Qur’anic terms functioning as a substitute for the broader concept of religion. The primary aim of this research is to present a systematic model of the semantic components of this concept and to clarify its relationship with the Qur’anic guidance system. The major contributions of the study include: presenting the first comprehensive semantic plan of ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm based on ten key components (uprightness, moderation, unity, servitude to God, proximity to the Divine Presence of the seeker, reliance on God, universality, completion of proof, existential breadth, and unifying capacity); developing a new theoretical framework for analyzing Qur’anic vocabulary by integrating thematic exegesis, contextual analysis, and structuralist semantics within the semantic network of ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm; and demonstrating the central position of ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm in the Qur’an through qualitative content analysis. By examining all Qur’anic verses associated with the concept of dīn and the vocabulary within its semantic domain, the study categorizes the relevant verses into three levels: verses explaining the nature of ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm; verses addressing the factors that lead to guidance toward it; and verses identifying its concrete manifestations. The analysis draws on comparative study of major exegetical opinions and semantic network analysis. The findings clearly show that, due to its comprehensive and integrated semantic components, ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm represents the most expressive Qur’anic substitute for the concept of dīn. This concept not only offers a holistic portrayal of religion in the Qur’an but also demonstrates considerable potential for addressing the needs of contemporary humanity.
