Abstract:   (7 Views)
Contextual indicators (qarā’īn-e maqāmi) play a pivotal role in the interpretation of the Holy Quran, as they facilitate a more precise and profound understanding of the intended meaning of the verses. Achieving the original purpose of the Quranic text is inherently difficult without due consideration of the historical and socio-cultural contexts of revelation. This study aims to investigate the methodology of Allameh Tabataba’i in interpreting Ayāt al-Aḥkām (verses pertaining to legal commandments), with a specific focus on his application of contextual indicators. The research argues that attending to these indicators is essential to prevent erroneous interpretations and tafsir bi-al-ra’y (interpretation based on personal opinion). Through a qualitative analysis of Al-Mizān, this study demonstrates how Allameh Tabataba’i integrates the analysis of sha’n al-nuzūl (occasions of revelation), target audiences, and the social milieu of the time to discern the philosophy behind legal legislations. Key examples, such as his interpretation of verses concerning qisas (retribution) and economic mandates like ribā (usury), reveal his focus on the socio-cultural landscape of pre-Islamic Arabia and the gradual nature of legal revelation. Furthermore, the findings indicate that Allameh’s approach transcends mere historical context; he combines rhetorical analysis with linguistic rigor to derive a comprehensive understanding of the legal text. This paper underscores the significance of his methodology as a robust framework for contemporary jurisprudential exegesis.
